Membership Criteria

  • Complete and submit online application form.
  • Members may be from UT Health San Antonio, Texas Biomed, Southwest Research Institute or UTSA campuses. Faculty may be on any track, research, tenure, service or clinical.
  • Have a primary faculty appointment in a department while retaining full responsibility to that department.
  • Members should have an interest in the fields of molecular and mitochondrial medicine, elucidating undescribed mechanisms of cell processes that regulate mitochondrial biology including ion signaling, redox biology, and mitochondrial medicine in health and disease, through associated metabolites, signal transducers, cellular dynamics, and organ function.
  • Ideally, members and prospective members should also be interested in seeking out collaborative extramural funding opportunities from sources such as the NIH, DOD, and the VA.

The Center for Mitochondrial Medicine (CMM) a collaboration of forward and expansive thinkers leading the field in mitochondrial discovery will reflect the presence of multiple leaders, innovators and clinicians involved in groundbreaking research which encompasses novel discoveries of cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the modulation of ion channels, mitochondrial energetics, and cellular metabolism at multiple levels including cells, organisms, and humans. The research and the clinical focus of CMM will be to identify and define genes, metabolites, ions, drugs, and drug targets that are involved in mitochondrial dysfunction, perturbation of signal transduction, and heightened oxidative stress that are the cause or consequence for pathogenesis.  Characterizing the human disease-causing mutations will aid in biomarker (clinical diagnostics) discovery, assist drug development, and create a unique therapeutic platform to alleviate morbidity and mortality of metabolic, aging, oncogenic, ALI/ARDS, COPD, cardiovascular, inflammatory, and neurodegenerative diseases. This will permeate barriers to bridge basic science research to therapeutics development and clinical practice.

The vision of the Center for Mitochondrial Medicine (CMM) is to be a leading and innovative hub for scholarly training in medical research, clinical practice and translational medicine that implements discoveries in this field to diagnostics and therapeutics that saves lives. While serving to promote and validate UT Health San Antonio as a Center of Excellence recognized globally.

Membership Benefits:

As a CMM member, the center will support research training opportunities as well as the advancement of clinical research to attenuate the gap between research discoveries and clinical practice that improves lives and elevates standards of care. Faculty members benefit from expertise of critical methodologies, access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and equipment, participation in and community exposure through a highly focused CMM seminar series that will highlight and promote world renowned basic and clinical researchers and pioneers in this field. The CMM will provide personnel expertise to assist with equipment operation, experimental design and interpretation. The CMM faculties currently collaborate with multiple institutions including, MIT/Harvard, Columbia, UPenn, Cornell, Princeton, UTSW, MSKCC, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, University of Iowa, UCSD, NIH (NIA and NIGRI), University of Delaware and CalTech. Allow CMM to exponentially improve the quality of your research, provide a competitive edge for grants and strengthen your future publication and discovery success!
